First Fortnight is an art-based project which aims at creating awareness of mental health in Ireland, being appropriately named because it takes place during the first two weeks of January. Since its establishment in 2010 its profile has grown with every year. Mental health-prejudice and discrimination can do more lasting harm to people than a period of low mood or self harm. An awareness campaign in the First Fortnight of the year works because this can be a particularly hard time of year for sufferers of mental illness and creating awareness is more likely to be open to an empathic response. Hopefully First Fortnight of every year will be synonymous with mental health awareness and ending discrimination, prejudice and social stigma. The project utilises the mediums of the arts to create a platform for our partner organisation to get their message heard.
This year i enjoyed the street art projects which took place, particularly ADW's "Lablez Are For Jars Not For People" and Masers "U Are Alive."
